Mpumalanga province, affectionaly called "The Place Where the Sun Rises" lies in eastern South Africa, bordering Swaziland and Mozambique and constitutes 6.5% of South Africa's land area. The capital of Mpumalanga is Mbombela, better known as Nelspruit. The off-road Mpumalanga tour includes some of the beautiful scenery of the scenic Mpumalanga tour, but focusses on some more off-road riding routes.

Mpumalanga Motorcycle Toure - Scenic Route

Our Mpumalanga off-road tour takes us from Johannesburg through the Eastern Highveld towards Amersfoort, with predominantly grassland, cornfield and dairy farms. This area also represents the majority of the country’s coal mines. We will spend two nights at the Country Trax Amersfoort Off-Road Academy - home of the legend of adventure riding, Jan "Staal" du Toit. CountryTrax Amersfoort is rated one of the best Adventure Bike Training facilities in the world. Although we will not have time to conduct a complete course, we set aside the whole day to spend on the farm just riding or practising and improving skills.

From Amersfoort we are travelling towards the Drakensberg which exceeds heights of 2,000m in most places to overnight at a spectacular lodge on the Longtom Pass. This region has alpine grasslands, Pine and Eucalyptus (Blue Gum) plantations and small pockets of indigenous forest. The Lowveld is relatively flat with interspersed rocky outcrops. Another highlight will be overlooking the Blyde River Canyon from the Mariepskop view point. If you never had the feeling of standing on top of the world then this will be your day. Before we head back to Johannesburg on the Sunday, we take more interesting gravel roads towards the N4 to guide us back to Johannesburg via the Schoemanskloof pass.

Pillion Riding

Our tour is specifically aimed at riders who live far from Mpumalanga, and do not have the time to explore this area by themselves or over a weekend. The tour price therefore includes transport of your motorcycle from Cape Town to Johannesburg and back, as well as return flight tickets from Cape Town to Johannesburg. We do however also cater for Gauteng riders (or other areas), who would like to meet us in Johannesburg to join us on this magical tour.

Small groups of only 7-9 motorcycles allow for a more personalised and unique experience. The trip is suitable for riders which are comfortable with mountain passes and sharp bends (intermediate riders) and is pillion friendly given that you and your pillion feel comfortable riding longer distance gravel roads together.

If required, we can arrange motorcycle rentals for you. This will incur additional costs. Please contact us for a quotation.

Daily Itinerary

Country Trax Amersfoort, Mpumalanga - SOUTH AFRICA

Day 1 - 295km

Fly from Cape Town to OR Tambo Airport in the morning. Upon your arrival the shuttle (Uber) will take you to our nearby depot, where your bike will be ready and waiting for your Mpumalanga Off-Road 5 day tour. After changing into your riding gear and securing the luggage to your bike, we will be out of the city and on our way to Country Trax Amersfoort, home of Jan "Staal" du Toit. Jan has specially designed and prepared the facilities on the 600-hectare farm for off-road training of world class standard, with many natural and manmade obstacles to ride with just one goal in mind - to double your skills and half your fears.

Day 2 & 3 - Fun/Training/Rest

After a sumpsuous breakfast, we will have a day full of fun, training and outrides on the farm. Although not a comprehensive course, we will assist you in explaining the theory on how to approach certain challenges and demonstrate how to overcome obstacles such as water, logs and holes in the road, uphills, downhills etc.

In the evening we relax around the bon fire, discussing our experiences of the day.

On day 3 we will do an escarpment route outride - a really awesome route.

Misty Mountain, Mpumalanga - SOUTH AFRICA

Day 4 - 286km

After breakfast we are heading towards the forestry town of Sabie via several gravel roads, passing through Chrissiesmeer. Chrissiesmeer is in the centre of South Africa's largest lake district with some 270 lakes and pans located within a 20 km radius. Chrissiesmeer, is also the site of the 1901 Battle of Chrissiesmeer. The graveyard where the soldiers of both sides were laid to rest has one unique feature: the British soldiers and the Boers who did not support the cause of the battle are buried in an opposite direction to the Boer soldiers.

From Chrissiesmeer we ride the spectacular Longtom Pass. The Long Tom Pass is 2,138m above sea level, climbs 671 vertical metres and has 66 bends. It is probably Mpumalanga's most popular pass.

Our accommodation is a few kilometers before we reach Sabie, with breathtaking views over the escarpment.

Mariepskop View Point, Mpumalanga - SOUTH AFRICA

Day 5 - 250Km

Today we ride to “The Top of the World”. Our route takes us via mostly gravel roads to Mariepskop View Point from where we will overlook the Blyde River Canyon from the Eastern side. Breath-taking views and spectacular gravel roads will be on the order of the day. On our way back to Sabie we enjoy the magnificent Abel Erasmus Pass and visit God’s Window.

Kaapsehoop Horses, Mpumalanga - SOUTH AFRICA

Day 6 - 350Km

Unfortunately, all good things come to an end and after breakfast we head back to Johannesburg. Our route takes us via Schoemanskloof, where we will stop at Old Joe – a human shaped rock erected by the builders of the first motorway through Schoemanskloof in honour of Joe Barbas. Joe supervised the construction of the road and was a colourful personality, who was held in high regard due to his excellent interpersonal skills. After Schoemanskloof we get onto the N4 heading back to Johannesburg to catch the plane to Cape Town late afternoon.
