Vemar Helmets

Vemar Helmets, based in Grosseto, Italy has been producing and selling motorcycle helmets since 1986. Initially the company produced helmets in composite materials for some of the leading Italian and foreign brands together with their own Vemar brand production.

The primary targets were Quality and Safety. Gradually Vemar equipped itself with more modern and sophisticated equipment for an increasingly complete and qualitatively advanced production.

A modern equipped testing laboratory complying with the strictest world standards, hydrojet robots to cut the fibre shells and automatic spraying plants using an UV-ray drying process, are just some of the equipment making Vemar Helmets the leading fibre helmet producer in Europe.

Vemar Helmets has one of the most complete ranges of helmets currently available on the market.

The range stretches from extra-light helmets with carbon only shells to ECE 22-05 certified helmets for children. It includes the VSR racing helmet (which riders have ridden to victory in the top World Championships) to the Interactive Line helmets (the first helmets in the world using Bluetooth technology), and also VRX5 and VRX7 Off-road helmets.

All Vemar helmets imported are ECE certified and homologated by the NRCS (National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications) in South Africa. This homologation process was previously done by the SABS (South African Bureau of Standards).

A crash helmet is a vitally important personal safety device for every motorcyclist, whether riding as an official racing rider or just for the love of motorbikes.

The safety regulations were all unified by the introduction of the ECE 22 STANDARD in 1972. Five subsequent amendments were then introduced until reaching the current version, identified since 2000 as the ECE 22.05 standard.

The normative presently provides for a series of standard tests:
• visor certification (transmittance, distortion…)
• test for falling off
• tests for dynamic strap stretching
• shell abrasion tests
• compression tests
• and above all the most well known test: crash testing on the shell at room temperature and under extreme conditions (-20°C, +50°C, with humidity).

The points receiving the blow have been well defined by the standard and correspond to the vital zones of a person's head (FRONT, TOP, REAR, RIGHT SIDE, LEFT SIDE, CHIN). The helmet is dropped from a height corresponding to the speed of a fall at 7.5 m/s. The PEAK acceleration parameter and the HIC parameter (both measured in multiples of g), are used to measure the effects of impact that must not exceed 275g and 2400HIC respectively.

It is therefore very important for users to always make sure they are wearing helmets with a certification label on them, certifying that it has passed a series of tests to ensure that it has been made to said safety standard.

The procedure followed for applying the certification label is in fact divided up into the following steps:
1. Certification with a certification company (after testing 5 helmets per size).
2. Production of the first batch of helmets from which the Certification Company selects 60 helmets at RANDOM to test for production qualification purposes.
3. Routine controls on each batch performed at a certified laboratory.

The certification label is practically an identity card for the helmet giving its characteristics for performance and safety, one should therefore know how to read it.
