The Touratech Story
In any conversation about motorcycling travelling, the name Touratech always crops up. From Touratech's simple beginnings around a coffee table, the company has grown to become one of the world leaders in its sector today.
This extraordinary success story started in 1984 when Herbert Schwarz did his first African tour to Morocco. In 1985 Herbert visited Syria, Jordan and Turkey with aluminium panniers he made himself. In 1990, Herbert, an electronics engineer by trade, developed the IMO200T, a motorcycle computer which is waterproof, illuminated and with many other functions. He made it for his own use - wanting to know what he missed on the trip - information on the length of the route, averages, daily mileage, engine temperature, external temperature etc. Reiner programmed the required functions. An absolute stunning development, all in one unit. In 1990, Herbert and Reiner made 100 of the IMO200T units. This is also the year they registered TOURATECH Motorradausrüstung (TOURATECH Motor Cycle Equipment) and introduced the IMO to the press. They never imagined where this would lead to 20+ years later.
“Made in Germany” stands for expertise and specialist knowledge as well as excellent quality. Touratech AG has been developing, designing and producing their products in the southern part of Germany since it was established.
At the Touratech headquarters in Niedereschach on the edge of the Black Forest, the whole team works together from development and production to sales and marketing to meet customer requirements.Products are shipped directly from Niedereschach to private customers as well as distributors all over the world.
From the experience of travelling many kilometers through impassable terrain in Africa came the second development, "Zega" aluminium panniers, named after a small village in Zaire that Herbert Schwarz and Jochen Schanz got to know on their journeys in the south of Africa. Today we can't imagine the motorbike touring scene without it.
Herbert has travelled throughout the world with all current GS models since the invention of the BMW Enduros. Their reliability and suitability for travelling fuelled him with enthusiasm and it was no wonder that the experiences on these trips were incorporated into products for motorbikes. Touratech developed necessary, practial and aesthetically pleasing accessories for all new BMW Enduros as soon as they came out on the market. In the beginning, Herbert Schwarz and Jochen Schanz, motorbike partners and accomplices since the word go, ran Touratech GBR in their spare time alongside their normal day jobs until the workload increased alarmingly. In 1995/96 they started working full time in the business. They both tackled everything from development through procurement and manufacturing the products up to selling and giving advice. It wasn't until 1997 that the first employee was taken on. In 1998 Touratech moved to a large building in Niedereschach on the edge of the Black Forest and in 1999 TOURATECH AG was founded from the existing business.
Today the product range includes much more than just the orignal tripmasters and pannier systems. In the navigation area Touratech is represented by products by Garmin and Magellan. The brackets for the sensitive equipment suitable for motorbike tracks and uneven terrain are unique. Here Touratech always has its ear to the ground: for each new product Touratech produces accessories. There are not only accessories for the current BMW Enduros but in the meantime Touratech has also developed total conversions. Riding motorbikes and travelling also means always living outside and close to nature. The Outdoor Department deals with all accessories for living in and with nature.
Touratech sells approximately 50% of its products directly on the Internet. As a result Touratech has an enormous customer base all over the world. In order to serve customers abroad better the importers' network is continuously being expanded.
Today Touratech AG employs more or less 250 permanent staff and countless part time workers for certain special tasks. In Niedereschach there is machinery with laser cutting machines, bending machines and welding robots. There is an electronics production facility and final fitting and packaging. Touratech is organised in small, autonomous teams that control production.
Logistics has a cleverly designed, partially self-improved sales and production planning system to control and check the processes. Sales focuses on speed. Thus each incoming e-mail should be answered on the same day but no later than 48 hours. Rapid, timely deliveries to customers is a given. Sales staff take a great deal of time giving accurate advice.
One thing sticks out above everything else: almost all the staff are enthusiastic motorcyclists. All this experience is incorporated into the products. Even Herbert and Jochen can't live without motorcycling. They will never give up travelling throughout the world and contact with other motorcycle travellers. You might run into them anywhere in the world in their dusty motorcycle boots and with mud-encrusted motorbikes. That is the big Touratech secret to success.
A very warm congratulations to Touratech on their 25th birthday this year!!!!
